So the other day Sven went to the vet. He got a ear infection which has been treated but needed little more medication for a boost. On Baytril and Ear drops for 12 days. He is already back to his old self.
You can see he has a little facial paralysis due to the infection but that has decreased a lot! We actually went to Claremont Animal Hospital and saw Dr. Fisher which I’m so happy with. Very knowledgeable and a lot closer for us. 30 mins vs. the other vet 2hrs away. Sven was a very good boy! I love this little man so much, takes after his father Squeakers Jr.
(Credit to Mi Mini Farm) Working with and understanding the Vienna gene -
Many have asked me to explain how Blue eye white (BEWS) program works. It’s an exciting and rewarding project! BEWS are not an easy, fast project and not for everyone. You’ll need time, patience and extra cages for this project. However, it is a rewarding one if you have the patience to see it through. It is so exciting as a breeder when you get a nest-box full of little kits and seeing little white bunnies with beautiful blue eyes! The gene responsible for creating the blue-eyed white is called the Vienna gene and is expressed in genetic code as vv. This gene is believed to be neither dominant nor recessive, as it lies hidden in certain cases.
When you breed a BEW to a BEW, statistically speaking, you'll get 100% BEW. The Vienna gene works the same in all breeds of rabbits. When you breed any color beside BEW to BEW, you will get what are known as Vienna Marked (VM) or Vienna Carriers (VC). A VM or VC is expressed in genetic code as Vv. A Vienna Marked and a Vienna Carrier are genetically the same. They both carry only one Vienna gene. The distinction is that a VM is a rabbit that you can look at and clearly see he carries the gene because he will have white “marks” on in places there should not be white. For example – a white paw, white toenails, white nose or a white blaze on its face/forehead. VM’s also can have blue, or partially blue eyes. Also known as marbling or marbled eyes. A VC will have no outward marks. A VC looks just like any other rabbit not carrying the Vienna gene. Therefore, a VC can be shown. A VM cannot be shown. BEWS can also be shown as long as they are recognized in your rabbit breed.
Below is a chart and 5 ways of what you can statistically expect when breeding for BEWs.
As you can see from the chart above, the best way to get BEWS is BEW x BEW breeding. However, depending on your breed choice, that may be very difficult to find or expensive to obtain a breeding pair. You will also want to breed in some other colors INTO your BEW program to maintain good type in your lines. BEWS are hard to maintain good type with and you must work with “normal” rabbits (rabbits NOT carrying the Vienna gene) and or VC/VM to maintain good type. If you consistently only breed BEW to BEW you are going to end up with some undesirable type in your program that will not be competitive on the show tables.
BEW X NORMAL is the way many breeders get their start. Usually by obtaining a BEW buck and pairing with your best normal doe. The offspring will result in 100% VM or VC. You then take those offspring and breed them back to the BEW parent (for a 50% chance of BEWS) or if you bred 2 does, you could breed the offspring to each other (for a 25% chance of BEWS).
If you choose to breed VC/VM to each other, this crossing will result in some "normal" offspring, "Normal" refers to a non-Vienna carrying rabbit. There is no way to know which ones could be VC's that didn't get a white marking, and which ones are just plain normal without the Vienna gene. Any offspring from a cross like this should always remain in a BEW program or be sold as pets only. Breeding one of these animals back into other colors is a huge no-no. They will cause major problems for years in the lines with white spots and white nails. Once the Vienna gene is in, it can stay in lines for years! BEW is like a one-way street almost anything can come in, but nothing can go out. Should you sell a VC/VM, or possible VC to someone it is YOUR responsibility as a breeder to educate and inform the buyer that the animal has, or could possibly have the Vienna gene. It is also your responsibility as an ethical breeder to explain what this means to the person buying it. I CANNOT emphasize this enough! I’ve seen 4-H kids bringing a VM bunny to their local fair, only to be told, they cannot show it and the bunny has to go home. That’s heartbreaking for a kid! And it gives the Vienna gene a bad rap.
**CANT STRESS THIS NEXT SECTION ENOUGH**
🛑You can breed in almost any color INTO your BEW program (Avoid using shaded colors and chocolate as you tend to get a red cast to the eye, which results in a lilac colored eyes. Cool to see, but not what you want in your program for future generations). If you get any of these you should not use them in your BEW program. You should also discontinue using the parent animal that is causing this. The best colors to breed in are black, steel or Chestnut Agouti (as long as it’s not chocolate based). Other colors and brokens are fine too, as long as you know what’s behind them. Some breeders have said that brokens can be hard to distinguish from VMs. I haven’t found this to be an issue with Mini lops but in other breeds it could be an issue. 🛑
Many wonder why BEWS and VC/VM’s are so expensive? Here’s why – Not a lot of breeders work with BEWS, especially in mini lops. Speaking for our BEW program, we paid a transporter to transport our BEW buck from another state, several hundred miles away so we could start our program. After quarantining him for a month, we bred him to our 2 best does. Waited the 31 days for them to be born. Then waited an additional 7-8 months for the offspring to mature to be bred back to the BEW buck. Finally, 9 months after we got our BEW buck we got our first BEWS - Exciting! Currently we are waiting for our BEW babies to grow up, so we can breed them back to BEWS again! 4 generations later and probably at least 12-18 months from the start of our project, we will finally have a BEW x BEW breeding. We are still waiting for our 3rd generation to mature for the BEW x BEW breeding. By buying Vienna carriers from us, you are skipping that 9 months of waiting and as soon as your animal(s) are mature, you can begin breeding and get BEWS much quicker. If it’s a VC x VC breeding, you will be able to get to BEWS faster, but the downside is, It’s only a 25% chance of BEWS. And the rest of the litter that’s not BEW, you’ll need to either test breed the offspring to see if they carry the Vienna gene or breed only the ones that are VM and BEWS. Our prices for our BEW program animals are based on this and their type. Most of our Vienna offspring has great type and do well on the show tables. Its once you begin to get BEWS, you can lose some of that type, so it’s something you consistently have to keep working at.
I know this was a long article and I hope it helped you to decide whether getting into a BEW program is for you! If you have any questions, feel free to ask! If you are a BEW breeder and would like to share my article – Please share it directly from this post. Or give article credit to Mi Mini Farm and a link back to this article is appreciated. Thank you!
***Pedigree's will be not be given out if you are not breeding. If you are wanting a Pedigree it will be a additional $5.00. I do not want pets bred period!
I will not being send pets home with pedigrees, I will send them with a Birth Cert & Health Record.
I'm doing so due to I don't want people mixing my lines up and making pedigrees with bad types or rabbits that shouldn't be bred and having my lines behind it.
I will also not just sell to any breeder, you need to be a reputable breeder. I do not want my Mini Lops having just any accidental litters with other non- Mini Lop breeds or mixes.
If you are just starting out breeding than I need to feel like you know what you are doing and willing to understand and work with me. Not everyone should breed because they just wan to. There is a lot that goes into breeding etc!
If you are in 4H, I will need proof before I send a pedigree with the rabbit.
Sadly I have seen too many Ooops aka Accidental breeding and I'm not happy. If you are getting a rabbit for a pet only which is why I ask in my questionnaire there should be no way they get pregnant and have babies.
If that happens than you are allowing it which is not being a great owner! Sorry but my rabbits and safety come 1st! Thank you, Crystal Beau's Maple Leaf Rabbitry
Anyone looking to add a bunny that has a bunny already or wanting 2. I will be making a strict policy and will be updating my policy in the next few days.
🛑 1: If you have a rabbit already and are looking to add another rabbit to your family. I will only sell the same sex. I will not sell the opposite sex unless you have proof of spay or neuter from your vet. If you do not have that you will not get a rabbit of the opposite sex!
If you choose to not want to fix your rabbit than you will only be offered a rabbit of the same sex!
🛑 2. If you are looking for 2 rabbits I will only sell the same sex. I WILL NOT sell 2 of different sexes.
🛑 3. If you are a breeder this is a little different however I will be selling to select breeders. You need to be a reputable breeder. If you are a youth you need to be willing to learn and educated which I will be more than happy to work with you.
However I will not sell my rabbit to breeder that wants to do mix breedings or are not educated!
⚠️ I do not want to sell to people that are not experienced or bunnies that should be pet only having accidental litters! ⚠️
Vanellope Von Sweetz aka Nellie Bear 03/03/2013 - 09/11/2018
From the moment Vanellope and her brothers were born it was love at 1st sight. After she came into the world her mom attacked her and her brothers, sadly some moms aren’t good moms.
However I never hesitate once taking you to the vet at 1 day old to make sure your wounds weren’t serious. Thankfully they weren’t and taking care of you from than on.
From that moment on you gave me another purpose in life. Raising you Nellie and your 2 brothers.
Everyday watching you grow, opening your eyes, crawling out of the small box we had for you was pure joy. My favorite time was hand feeding you the sucking sounds you would make.
We watched you grow into the most beautiful bunny ever, become a mother, best friend, a daughter (yes some might find it silly, but you were our kid). Celebrating your birthday with your brothers every year that won’t be the same.
Times when you got sick we stayed by our side but those time brought us closer and closer to you. Each time you fought hard and pulled through. You open your daddy’s eyes and hear to how a bond between a rabbit and person could happed. Which was and still is unbreakable.
Because of you, your Dad Beau, your brothers Yoda and Squeakers we have learned so much and we thank you. You left us your amazing daughter Fluttershy.
5 and 1/2 years wasn’t long enough for us and even though it is hard, we understand when it is time to go it is time. We only wish is was longer.
We will miss you begging for food, getting into trouble, miss seeing your white blaze in the when we get up at night. Your long hours of cuddles, your kisses. Miss seeing you snuggled to Yoda and taking care of him. Miss you being apart of the family.
In these past few weeks now I look back I noticed how Sven left you and Yoda alone. As if he was giving you two time with each other.
Little did we know looking back when you accepted Sven to be with you and Yoda. It was your way of teaching him to be a good companion for him when you leave. I’m sure you had you talks with him.
I wish I could of done more Nellie, I though you were going to be okay when you ate some apple and green leaf last night. I laid next to your for hours last night into the early morning. When you nudged my hand as if you were trying to tell me something, but I didn’t see that you were trying to tell me it was your time.
Than early this morning when you couldn’t get up I knew than you were losing the fight even though you were trying to stay. You loved us and we loved you unconditionally.
Your daddy cherished every moment holding you in his arms right before you passed, even though it was a hard goodbye. We hope you know how much you are going to be missed and how much you were loved.
Never in my life have we owned animal that made in deep and huge impact on our life, family and hearts.
Nellie say Hi to your Daddy Beau Sr, Squeakers, Bluebell and all the others. When we look up at the moon as we do all the time to say Hi to Beau and Squeaker we will now see you. “Talking to the Moon”.
Not a sec, min, hour goes by that our hearts aren’t breaking, or we aren’t thinking about you. We look forward to the day we get to see you, Beau and Squeakers and everyone.
We will take good care of Yoda, I know he missed you deeply. Rest In Peace Baby Girl!
Love you Mommy Daddy Comie, Jake, Yoda and all of your bunny family.
5 years ago today 7/18/2013 we said goodbye to you Beau Sr. (Little late posting)
I’m sure some think that it is odd that I always post on the day you left every year. However we owe so much to you!
Without you I would of never known the love of a rabbit, we would of never had Nellie, Yoda & Squeakers your beautiful babies. Without you I wouldn’t know as much as I do about rabbits. I could go on and on why you are so important to our family.
We will always honor your birthday and your life.
Today 7/18/2018 my hubby woke up to see a small light with a rainbow in it, shining on the floor. The exact spot you past away in our room. The odd thing way out curtain was barley open to shin the much light through. The light stayed just long enough for him to wake me up to see it. Than it slowly faded alway.
It was like you were stopping in to say hi and that you were okay and that you loved us. It might sound corny to some but that I believe in a lot of things.
Not a day go by that I don’t miss you. You were taken too early but when god says it is your time it is your time.
I know someday we will meet again buddy. Mommy, Daddy, Jake, Tacomie, your kids and all the buns love you! ❤️😢
He has produced a lot of babies with amazing temperaments. Followed his father’s and grandfathers paw steps and definitely has filled them.
He always has been a pet 1st and breeder last, but today I felt like he told me his was done.
He will live the rest of his life hanging out with all buns and our family. Enjoy being pampered like the king he is.
I discovered this after realizing that Kyubi was due to be bred and he only got her once today. After that once he didn’t have the interest like he use to. So we will see if Kyubi takes if so that will be his last litter ever!
With that we have chose to honor and respect his wishes that I read though his body language.
He has definitely earn retirement! Love you Beau Jr! Happy Retirement baby!
